Textile export unable to strike target

Statistics revealed by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) shows that the textile exports decreased in the first ten months of current financial year.

Export figures for textile products stood at $8.90 billion in July-April of 2006-07, came short of $9.33 billion target set during July to April 2007.

The cotton yarn export stood at $49 million during this period against the target of $58 million. The export of cotton yarn was $1.18 billion as against the target of $1.26 billion.

Readymade garments exported worth $1.14 billion as against the target of $1.17 billion and made-up articles excluding bed wear brought $377 million against $417 million.

Bedwear export fetched $1.60 billion against its target of $1.68 billion. Towels export stood at $ 490 million against $526 million target during the period under review.

But the picture is not so grim when few items exceeded their target during the first ten months.

Export of yarns (other than cotton) fetched $61 million against the target of $38 million. Knitted fabrics stood at $48 million against the mark of $42 million. The knitwear export met the target of $1.60 billion by exceeding a bit.

Export of tents, canvas, art silk, synthetic textile and other items outshine their targets in the first ten months of 2007.

Analyst suggest that in order to face the competitiveness in the international market and reach the target, textile sector need to produce quality products.
