With the advent of pre-monsoon showers, cotton farmers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh have started sowing transgenic seeds.

Recently, usage of transgenic cotton seed has become popular among farmers because of its abundant yield. State Governments have reduced prices of transgenic cotton seeds and farmers are switching from oilseeds to cotton for better yield and more profit.

In the current crop year, which runs from August to September, India is estimated to produce a record yield of 26 million bales of cotton, up from 24.2 million last year.

Cotton exports during 2006-07 are estimated to touch around 4.5 million bales, with Gujarat selling 3.7 million bales, largely to China, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
