Employment in textile industry expected to go up by 17.37mn

Textile industry accounts for diverse processes ranging from cotton ginning and spinning to manufacture of cloth in handlooms, power looms and composite mills. It also includes other activities like processing, knitting, clothing and moving up to marketing of the products.
Apart from these activities the industry also generates significant employment through forward and backward linkages including both in traditional activities like in production of cotton and other natural fibers and also in modern industries like textile design and fashions. Consequently the textile industry is the largest employment provider in the country after agriculture.
The total direct employment in the textile industry in March 2006 is estimated to be 33.17 million while the indirect employment generated is an even higher 54.85 million which takes the total employment by the industry to a massive 88.02 million. Even in the organized sector textiles account for 19% of the employment in the factories sector.
According to the most recent estimates the employment in the industry is expected to go up by 17.37 million over the Eleventh Plan period to touch 105.39 million. While the direct employment in the industry would go up by 12.02 million to 45.19 million, the indirect employment will go up by 5.35 million to 60.20 million during the period.
The employment growth is based on the assumption of a 12% growth in production and the 22% growth in exports in the textile sector estimated by the working group of the planning commission.
