Polyester fibre prices continue upward trend

According to Monthly Report on cotton market issued by State Development and Reform Commission on June 15th, May textile and garment exports reached US $13.16 billion, up $3.3 billion compared to the previous month, an increase of 17.8 percent over the same period last year.

From January to May this year, textile and garment exports scored $57.35 billion, a boost of 15.6 percent over the same time of previous year. Since 2006, national textile and garment exports amounted to $110 billion, a growth of 20.4 percent over the same period last year.

In addition, the Report also showed that domestic textile production continued to maintain a rapid growth.

May national yarn output was 1.64 million tons, a climb of 19.7 percent over the same period last year. From January to May this year, national yarn output was 7.41 million tons, improving 20.6 percent over the same time last year.

Since 2006, national yarn output was 13.8 million tons, a surge of 20.3 percent over the same time last year. Since May, 100% cotton yarn 32s experienced price waves, but monthly average price stood at 18,507 yuan per ton, 13 yuan lesser than that from last month.

Rates of polyester staple fibers continued to rise. May monthly average price was at 11,727 yuan per ton, rising 371 yuan. The spread between local standard cotton and polyester staple for the month was 1244 yuan per ton, narrowing 417 yuan per ton from last month.

These data also confirmearlier views from the industry: the rapid growth of textile product production, to some extent, reflects the market's strong consumer demand.

With the improvement of living standards and the changing of consumer's attitudes, consumer demand in domestic market for textile and apparel categories is gradually increasing; demand on domestic market will be important driving factors in the growth of textile and garment industry.
