The Federal Government has set a target to produce around 15 million cotton bales for the crop season 2007-08, but experts believe that there would be a shortfall of around 3.4 million bales.
Statistics reveal that country's cotton import is mounting up with about 47,500 bales of raw cotton has entered in the country and many orders are pending.
Pakistan has imported about 1.8 million cotton bales worth around Rs30 billion from US, India and other major cotton producing countries during August 2006 to May 2007.
As country's demand for raw cotton increased to more than 16 million bales against 15.5 million bales last year, during the period millers and spinners imported around 0.360 million bales.
The country is facing this shortfall because of virus attack in the cotton plants.
