Average polyester & acrylic prices hike notably in April

Average prices for polyester and acrylic increased moderately in April relative to March. Average prices are calculated from high and low United States dollar prices across Asia, Western Europe and the United States. Compared to April 2006 prices, the average polyester and acrylic prices were nearing the decade-long highs experienced in late 2006.

Even so, with the increase in the price of 21 micron wool in April, the price ratio of apparel wool to synthetic fibres rose, bringing 21 micron wool to about 4 times the price of synthetics compared with a long term average of around 3 times.

Polyester prices strengthened in April because of higher MEG and PTA (raw material) costs and stronger demand in China where demand from downstream processors rose as the Chinese textile industry entered its peak season. At the end of April prices stabilised as demand from downstream processors weakened with May Day holidays.

Higher acrylic prices in April were driven by increased acrylonitrile (raw material) costs, also due to higher crude oil prices. Acrylic price rises were centered in Asia. Demand for acrylic was relatively dull, continuing the low demand trend for the past two years.
