Textile industry continues to rely on fibre import

The Ministry of Trade (MOT) recently reported that Vietnamese textile and apparel industry during March 2007 has imported around 35.2 thousand tons fibre for domestic production, worth $58.2 million, which registered a year–on–year growth of 4.9 percent and 16.5 percent respectively.
During first quarter of 2007, the figures of importing fibres show a turnover of 96.5 thousand tons for $159.5 million, up by 46.9 percent and 57 percent over same period last year.
Among supplying countries, Taiwan ranks top, which accounts for 48 percent of total fibre imports turnover of Vietnam.
In March 2007, Taiwan exported 16.9 thousand tons fibres to Vietnam, worth $26.3 million, posted 21.8 percent and 41.9 percent boost, respectively, in comparison with same period 2006. This pushed the figures of first qurater up by 45.3 thousand tons for $69.6 million.
