A slew of other inventions were needed in order to gather all the pieces in place. Secondly, legal issues were raised by an American competitor. These began in 1977, and it was only after 156 lawsuits later, in May 1988, that the problems were resolved. Thirdly, the Netherlands was confronted with the oil crisis and economic recessions.

Akzo posted sharp losses, leading to regular halts in funding for the aramid project. Research was put on a back burner and construction of factories for the manufacture of polymers and spinning was repeatedly postponed. Finally, the Investment and Development Corporation for Northern Netherlands offered hope for the future. One condition was that the factories would need to be built in Delfzijl and Emmen.

Construction began in 1983, but there were many obstacles to surmount before the factories could become operational. Today Twaron has a Japanese parent company (Teijin Ltd.), but the Research Department and Teijin Twaron headquarters, as well as other divisions, are still located in Arnhem.

In the book “Specters, smart fellows and strategists, the heroic deeds and gripping tales of Twaron”, people relate their stories of the many ups and downs they have experienced in the company's history. People responsible for ingenious discoveries, people involved in the legal battles, and people confronted on the factory floor with specters and swashbucklers. The book contains many stories and photographs never before published, and includes a bookmark ribbon made out of Twaron.
