Twenty one world leaders now know the comfort and quality of Australian Merino wool, having been presented with extra-fine knitted sweaters when they were in Sydney for the 2007 APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in September.
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) presented the gifts to the leaders along with information on the 200 year anniversary of Australian Merino wool. The 14 micron sweaters were created by Jemala from wool grown in Benalla, Victoria in Australia's South-East.
Jemala held the world record in 2002 for its 12.9 micron bale, and continues to produce superb products. Its processes include sending its Ultrafine Saxon Merino wool to Italy for spinning before garments are crafted.
“The knit machine used to create the garments is a unique, 45 gauge machine, the finest of its kind in the world,” said Mr Ian Gill from Jemala.
AWI was pleased to present the gifts on behalf of the Australian wool industry. It was the perfect example of the innovation, excellence and contemporary fashion that the Australian wool industry is known for.
“Like any industry the Australian wool industry continues to progress, becoming even more economical, implementing safer and more efficient practices, creating new technologies, innovative textiles, and finer and softer fleeces,” said AWI Global Product Development Manager, Jimmy Jackson.
“Innovation is key to the future success of the Australian wool industry, and providing these gifts gaveus the opportunity to show the world's leaders the premium natural fibre we produce. I understand the garments were very well received by the APEC leaders,” said Mr Jackson.
AWI is continuing to work with Jemala to further their business relationship.
