Wool market made a positive start this year

The EMI in US terms (909¢) and is 214¢ above the 2002/03 peak of 695¢.

It was another good week, with the market continuing on from the strong pre-Christmas close and again finishing on a strong note. The closing prices in Australian and US currencies are at a season high and 1¢ below the season high in Euros.

There were increases across all wool types and micron ranges, with the largest increases among the fine and medium wools; and the stronger and better styled wools attracting very good competition.

Average AWEX Micron Price Guides (MPGs) were up by 13¢ for 16.5 microns, by 27¢ for 17.0, by 50¢ for 17.5 and by 22¢ for 18.0 microns. 18.5 to 20 microns were up by 27 to 30¢, 21 microns were up by 33¢ and 22 microns by 36¢. The increases dropped away to 14¢ for 23 microns and 5¢ for 24. Skirtings were in very keen demand, as were oddments. Crossbred average MPGs were up by 3 to 7¢.

There was a good spread of competition with buyers for China, Europe and India dominant.

Sales will be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle next week, when 71,818 bales are currently rostered for sale. Present estimates for the following three sales vary from 40,800 (Sydney and Melbourne only selling) to 53,800 bales, a decrease of 15.2% over the four sale period when compared with last year.

There were no sales in South Africa this week.
