Cotton cultivation, shrinking

Dak Lak province has a large acreage under cotton cultivation in the Central Highlands. However, the acreage has downsized from 16,000 in 2002 to 9,000 in 2003, 4,000 hectares in 2004 and even to a smaller area now.

According to growers, they need VND3.5-4 million on average to invest in 1 hectares of cotton to yield a tone of seeds and earn just VND3 million. Meanwhile, if they grow maize, which yields 5 tons per hectares they can earn up to VND10 million.

The textile industry considers expanding the cotton acreage to be one of its three top priority tasks. It will raise the average realization price to VND9,000-10,000 per kg in 2008 and even to higher levels in the coming years so that growers can realize remunerative prices. It will also encourage cross breeding of new high yielding varieties.

A plan has also been submitted by the ministry to increase the irrigation network which in turn will help the farmers to get higher yields from cotton crops.
