An interesting line up of speakers will offer their views on Merino breeding and business strategies at the Merinos Looking Forward seminar next Friday 15th February at Young.

Speakers include Richard Norton, National Wool and Livestock Manager, AWB/Landmark, Roger Fletcher, Fletcher International, Ross Baldwin, Bundilla Merino Stud, Andries Pienaar and Geoff Lindon, AWI Head of Sheep Technologies.

Andries Pienaar, an internationally renowned Merino breeder and judge of the Peppin Shaw Flock Ewe Competition, will speak on the essence of survival in agribusiness.

Mr Pienaar's Klipplaatsfontein Merino Stud was established 100 years ago in Colesberg South Africa.

Talking about what made his business a success for over a century; Mr Pienaar will also discuss the renewal properties of the Merino, the laws of productivity and his views on the future role of the Merino breed.

AWI's Geoff Lindon will outline AWI's research and development into alternatives for the current practice of mulesing to meet the industry commitment to phase out mulesing by 2010.

“Just as mulesing isn't the only flystrike prevention activity woolgrowers perform, the same will be the case with the alternatives. They will need to be considered as one part of the overall enterprise,” said Mr Lindon.

“There is an enormous range of sheep types and business approaches among woolgrowers within and between the wool growing regions in Australia. Each woolgrower can decide their own integrated breech blowfly strike management strategy, implementing current and new tools to assist breech blowfly strike control.”

The Merinos Looking Forward seminar is being held at the Young Services Club, Cloete Street Young, on Friday 15 February.
