India poses serious threat to domestic textile sector

A recent survey noted that the share of Chinese textile in international market has nearly touched 20 percent. India, on the other hand, lagged behind with contribution amounting to merely 3 percent.

However, experts strongly believes that if India adopts right policies and if the Government lends its full support to the domestic textile industry, the country could well emerge as a potential competitor to China.

While both India and China is blessed with a strong labor-force and an equally strong cotton base, the latter has an added advantage of producing weaving cloth in bulks and economy of scale, resulting from reduced cost per unit.

In contrast, if India comes up with well established clothing industrial parks it could also ensure increased exports for its textile products.

Since, India does not have any limit or quota on exports to America, unlike China, it could take advantage of the opportunity to elevate its supply of textile goods to US markets.
