When looked at in other currencies, the AWEX EMI increased by 14¢ (+1.6%) in US terms and decreased by 7¢ (-1.2%) in Euro terms when compared with the previous sale. The EMI in US terms (908¢) is 213¢ above the 2002/03 peak of 695¢ and only 6¢ below the current season peak.

The first Newcastle sale since the Christmas break saw some very good fine wools with high strength values on offer, particularly on the first day. Prices for Spinners types were quoted as 100¢ plus up on the Launceston sale two weeks ago and above the at the last Newcastle sale.

In other centres, the Merino fleece types eased in A$ terms The average AWEX Micron Price guide (MPG) was up by 37¢ clean for 16.5 microns over the last two weeks. In the case of other MPGs they were up by 1¢ for 17.0 microns, down by 15¢ for 17.5 microns, by 14¢ for 18.0 microns, by 6¢ for 18.5 microns, by 15¢ for 19.0 microns and by 12¢ for 19.5 microns since last week.

The 20.0 micron wool average MPG was down by 20¢, 21.0 microns by 10¢, 22.0 microns by 11¢, 23.0 microns by 14¢ and 24.0 microns by 24¢. Skirtings were again in strong demand while most oddments held their ground. There was a general easing of crossbred prices.

Buyers for Italy were dominant in Newcastle whereas those buying for China were again the major buyers in the other markets.

Sales will be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle next week, when 55,179 bales are currently rostered for sale. Present estimates for the following two sales vary from 38,600 to 49,120 (Sydney and Melbourne only) bales, a decrease of 10.2% over the three sale period when compared with last year.

In South African sales, the Cape Wools Indicator was down by 2.2% since last sale two weeks ago against a 3.0% appreciation of the Rand against the US Dollar and a 0.2% depreciation against the Euro.
