Bangladesh has so far enjoyed good trade relations with Germany, which also happens to be the second largest consumer of ready made garments. However, the country had noticed a down fall in apparel export to Germany last year.

Labour unrest in clothing sector of Bangladesh had made German entrepreneurs shift to other nations for the supply of garments. This has become a major concern for the country, as nearly 96 percent of its export consists of ready-to-wear clothing.

The bi-lateral trade dropped down from 1.88 billion Euro in 2006 to nearly 1.71 billion in 2007, showing a steep fall of 8.8 percent. The export to Germany was approximately 1.50 billion, witnessing a decrease of 4.8 percent.

Even the goods imported from Germany saw a decrease, it came up to only 215 million Euro last year, a fall of 29 percent when compared to 2006. The items consisted mainly of textile, leather products and chemicals.

Experts believe that, the situation is improving gradually as Bangladeshi entrepreneurs are now offering profit making deals to German enterprises which are difficult to resist.

The goverment in turn has assured all assistance to the companies in faster clearance of their consignments by improving the functioning of ports, as it plays an important role in carrying the consignments to various countries.
