Autograph night and launching of the Braskem Award 2008, at the Academy of Letters of Bahia.
The launch of the Braskem Award 2008, whose chosen literary genre for this year is the Short Story, was the highlight at the opening of academic activities at the Academy of Letters of Bahia, ABL, held last Thursday, March 13.
The ceremony was held at the Góes Calmon Palace, in Salvador, hosted by the president of the ALB, Edivaldo Boaventura. He was accompanied by Braskem Manager of Social Responsibility, Humberto Garrido, Secretary of Culture of Bahia, Márcio Meirelles, and president of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB), Consuelo Pondé.
The evening's schedule includes the autograph session with Bahia author Jorge de Souza Araújo, winner of the Essay Award 2006, author of the novel Floração de Imaginários: o romance baiano no século XX (Blooming of the Imaginary: the Bahia Novel of the 20th Century); awarding of the young São Paulo writer Rodrigo Petrônio Ribeiro, 32 years of age, winner of the Poetry Award 2007, author of Venho de um país selvagem (I Come from a Wild Country).
"This Award represents a lot to me, especially due to its intellectual seriousness. I am from São Paulo and my award is proof of the honesty involved in this literary recognition," celebrates Petrônio, who has already published six other books.
"Braskem's support of such noble initiatives, like this award that the House has held for so many years, demonstrates the company's commitment to our state's cultural promotion.
Partnerships such as these are always welcome," affirmed Marcio Meirelles, Secretary of Culture of Bahia, during the ALB ceremony, when speaking about the Award's importance.
The evening also honored Professor and Doctor Cláudio de Andrade Veiga, former president of the ALB, who earned the title of Member Benefactor. Veiga is 80 years old and he presided over the Academy for 26, leaving the position at the end of last year.
