Some of the proposed suggestions include, increasing cotton area by at least 3.20 million hectares, availability of 63,000 metric tons of certified seeds of approved cotton varieties, discouraging of late sowing, increasing plant population from 18,000 to 20,000 per acre and ensuring the availability of adequate insect specific pesticide especially for mealy bug and white fly.
There will be a global decline in cotton production with international level estimated at 118.8 million bales in 2007-08. This will nearly be 3 percent lower than the previous season because of a reduction in world area by 1.2 million hectares to 33.6 million hectares.
Most of the countries growing cotton are likely to see a recession in 2007-08 production. While US is estimated to encounter a decline of 12 percent, yield will drop in China by 3 percent, Pakistan by 11 percent and Turkey by 12 percent.
The only countries to register an increase are India and Brazil whose cotton production may grow by 11 and 5 percent respectively.
