From April 3-10, 2008, Basle will be turned into a jewellery and watch paradise. The largest country pavilion at BaselWorld will again be the stand of the jewellery and watch manufacturers from Hong Kong (Hall 6), organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).
Over an area of 6,500 sqm., 317 exhibitors will be presenting their collections in the sectors of jewellery, watches, parts and accessories for watches and packaging. Overall 370 companies from Hong Kong will be taking part in the exhibition.
Hong Kong is one of the world's leading exporters of jewellery and watches. Exports of jewellery made of precious metals, pearls and gemstones reached USD 4.3 billion in 2007 (+16.7 %). One of Hong Kong's most important markets is the EU which imported products for more than one billion US dollars (+18.9 %) in 2007.
The demand for watches and components rose in 2007 by 6.3 % to USD 6.4 billion and included wristwatches to a value of USD 4.3 billion (+5.5 %) and movements, watchstraps, parts and components for USD 1.7 billion (+13.2 %). Products to a total USD 1.5 billion (+6.1 %) were exported to the EU.
Hong Kong's watch and jewellery manufacturers are well known for their ODM competence and flexibility (“can-do attitude”). To improve competitiveness, they are increasingly developing and establishing own designs and brands. At BaselWorld 2008, several fashion shows will be taking place as part of a brand name promotion where visitors will be able to discover inspiring designs “Made by Hong Kong”.
