Natural gas exports to Thailand earned Myanmar (Burma) nearly US $2.7 billion amounting to 45 percent of the total exports made by the country.

On the whole, in 2007, the aggregate trade touched a record high of $8.7 billion of which exports contributed 5.9 billion while imports stood at 2.8 billion, leaving a trade surplus of 3.1 billion.

Export of natural gas from Myanmar have soared since 2002 when the country for the first time opened a pipeline to deliver gas from offshore reserves in the Gulf of Martaban to Thailand.

The trade proved so lucrative that Myanmar has been seeing a trade surplus every consecutive year since 2002.

Apart from natural gas, Myanmar also exported agricultural products amounting to $572 million and gems and jewelry valuing $561 million.

Imported goods on the other hand included fuel costing $471 million, textiles $276 million and machinery parts $243 million among others.
