According to the reports provided by American Agriculture Ministry, in the past 6 years, the global quantity of cotton imports went up by 34 percent and credit for this goes to China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey whose overall consumption for the raw material has enlarged in the period.

Instability of cotton market can be observed from the fact that while in 2005-06 China imported 19.30 million packages of cotton, in the year 2006-07, the country imported only 10.60 million packages.

In the period between 2001-07, import of cotton in 17 countries reached 15.90 million, of which China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey accounted for 86 percent.

Consumption in these countries has increased mainly due to expansion of their respective textile industry because of growing demand for inexpensive cotton products in the international market.

While cotton consumption for Pakistan increased by 50 percent in the past 6 years, that for Turkey surged by 20 percent in the same period.

China on the other hand produced some 7.60 million tons of cotton in 2007-08 inspite of which it will have to import 3.90 million tons to meet domestic demands.

Already, in the period September 2007- February 2008, the country imported 1.11 million tons of cotton, up by 0.249 million tons than the previous year.

The cotton cloth output in February 2008 was 1.86 billion meters, up by 0.288 billion meters than last year.

Main supply of the finished products made in China goes to America, however, recently, there has been a drop in the export to US as EU offers a better trade prospective.

In the first 2 months this year, export of Chinese textile and clothes to America went down by 7.79 percent than the same period last year, but, exports to EU reached 3.427 billion US dollars, up by 37.1 percent.

This clearly shows that China is successfully changing its potential market from America to EU and other developing countries.
