After the foundation ceremony of the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce on April 20, Mr P Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister stressed on the need to make Kerala a more robust and economically sound state.

Mr Chidambaram noted that the textile industry of Kerala has a bright future and must therefore adopt new technologies and better infrastructure to give Kunnur its rightful position as one of the major textile centers in the country.

The Minister ordered for an investigation as to why the proposal for setting up a project under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Project (SITP) in Kerala, was not put forward before the Central Government.

Further, Mr Chidambaram admitted that the Government must recognize the crucial role played by the private sector in the infrastructural development in any state.

Lack of proper infrastructure in Kerala had aroused concerns for the minister who observed that the state was lagging behind compared to its other southern neighbors.

Instantly a comparison between the state and Gujarat emerged where the latter came out successful as a maritime state whereas Kerala, which also had a long coast, remained sluggish in its overall development.

Mr Chidambaram attributed Gujarat's success to the policies adopted by the State Government that supported private sectors to develop ports. Infact, some of the private ports were larger than the public ones with better infrastructural facilities.

The rapid development of Gujarat is exemplary and the Government of Kerala must follow suit to obtain similar growth in its industrial sector.
