Decline in clothing & footwear prices in March

Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January to March 2008 increased by 2.6 per cent to 107.8 compared with that of 105.1 in the same period last year. Compared with that of the same month in 2007, the CPI increased by 2.8 per cent from 105.0 to 107.9, however compared with the previous month, the CPI remained unchanged at 107.9.

CPI changes for the period January – March 2008 / 2007:
The 2.6 per cent increase in the CPI was brought about by increases observed in the indices of all the main groups except those of Clothing & Footwear and Communication which decreased by 0.7 per cent respectively.

Taking into account the above changes as well as the weights assigned to the main groups, the relative contribution to the overall increase of 2.6 per cent in the CPI.

Monthly Changes for CPI:
Compared with the previous month, the CPI for March 2008 remained unchanged at 107.9. However, increases were shown in five main groups namely Miscellaneous Goods & Services (+ 0.4 per cent); Education (+ 0.1 per cent). Three main groups that showed declined in the index were Clothing & Footwear (- 0.7 per cent).

A reclassification of items according to their durability and services rendered showed increases in the index for Durable Goods (+ 0.3 per cent) and Services (+ 0.1 per cent). Decreases were recorded for Semi-Durable Goods (- 0.5 per cent) and Non-Durable Goods (- 0.1 per cent).
