The president of the Brazilian Agency for Promoting Exports and Imports, Alessandro Teixeira, was elected last April 18 president of Waipa (World Association of Investments Promotion Agencies), an entity that represents investment promotion agencies from 149 countries, with headquarters in Geneva.

He received the support of 49 representatives from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe, out of a total of 68 votes. He ran against Ziad Bahaa-El Din, from Egypt and got 70% of the votes.

Teixeira will have a two-year term and he took office the following day, together with vice-president elect Raymond Peter Mbilinyi, from Tanzania and Jayant Bhuyan, from India.

The choice of a Brazilian to preside over Waipa will give Brazil greater visibility in attracting investments.

The election was held in Accra, Ghana, during the World Investment Forum (WIF), which is the most important event on Waipa's calendar.

This year, the WIF is held simultaneously with the UNCTAD meeting – United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

“We are working hard to establish Brazil's image as a serious and committed body with both excellence and quality. The country's greater visibility in the global community is essential to attract investments to the country and expand the flow of foreign trade,” said Teixeira right after the election.

Waipa promotes the dissemination of best practices in investments as well as capacity building for promoting and attracting investments and exchanges between agencies. The institution has a total of 214 members representing countries from every continent.
