Energy savings seems to be the next most important thing on the agenda of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA) which has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cleaner Production Institute (CPI) for the purpose.

Together these entities will conduct energy audit of the textile processing industry. MoU documents have already been signed by representatives of SMEDA and CPI according to which the latter would help conduct energy audits in textile's sub-sector processing under a Program for Industrial Sustainable Development (PISD).

Energy audits would only be the first step of the project in which an assessment will be made regarding losses or wastage of energy. Thereafter, recommendations for energy consumption will be made along with solutions for process of improvement.

Moreover, the organizations have also agreed to conduct a series of workshops and training programs to spread awareness in the textile processing sector about the crucial issue of energy conservation.

It is believed that after the implementation of this program, an average of 10 percent of the energy will be saved in spinning units while 25-30 percent will be conserved in processing units.
