The Craft Development Institute (CDI), Srinagar, was established with an aim to provide professional training to all the aspiring artisans who wish to enhance their creative skills in order to make their career in sectors related to handicraft.

The institute offers theoretical as well as practical knowledge to the students and appreciates the innovative techniques that are incorporated to make the traditional craft techniques modern. This is done in order to generate interest among young generation towards the handicraft sector.

The authorities at Institute believe that, the only way of developing this industry is to bring in the educated people into the trade and train them. This would help people to understand and implement new designs and modern methods in making exclusive craft items.

CDI, is an autonomous Institute established by the office of Development Commissioner(Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and the Department of Industries and Commerce(Directorate of Handicrafts), Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
