Textile industry witnesses sluggish trend in Q1

The growth of domestic textile industry slowed down in the first quarter of 2008 as the sector achieved a year-on-year increase of 12.8 percent in terms of value; however, the growth rate lowered to 4.9 percentage points when compared to same period last year.

Export delivery value reached nearly 162.6 billion yuan, an increase of 11.1 percent, down 4.8 percentage points in growth rate. Yarn output of China reached almost 4.58 million tons, a rise of 10.2 percent and cloth production came up to 11.9 billion meters, growth of 9.5 percent.

Total numbers of garments produced were approximately 4.31 billion pieces, a boost of 5.9 percent. Chemical fiber output registered 5.75 million tons, a hike of 7.2 percent.

By the end of March, domestic cotton price index stood at 13,823 yuan per ton, up by 27 yuan when compared to February end, giving a year-on-year increase of 5.8 percent.

In the first two months of 2008, textile industry earned profit of almost 13.3 billion yuan, growing by 14.2 percent. Among them, profits achieved by textile sector went up by 17.1 percent, apparel industry's profit rose almost 13.7 percent. On the other hand, profits obtained by chemical fiber industry dropped by 0.2 percent.
