Textile & other industries to get impacted by EU PFOS law

European Union issued a law late last year to limit the use of Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a chemical used in industrial goods such as textile and leather products and carpets. EU member countries have been urged to implement this law from June 27, 2008.

The law had been issued because recent studies have revealed that PFOS contains toxic pollutants that can accumulate to very dangerous levels. Countries like EU, America, Canada and others have expressed keen interest in reducing the harmful effects of this chemical.

According to the EU law, starting from June 27, 2008, the content of PFOS must be less than 1µg/m2 in textile products. The implementation of this regulation is sure to directly affect the Chinese textiles, leather, packing, cosmetic and other industries.

In spite of this, Chinese Government has issued a notice asking the inspection and quarantine departments and the related enterprises to comply with the EU laws. However, investigation reports show that manufacturing enterprises have not abided by the PFOS law.

In fact, China does not even have the textile auxiliaries that will help meet the PFOS control standards.
