Farmers troubled by low proceeds from silkworm cocoons

From the end of May 2008, silkworm rearing farmers in Tongxian City of Zhejiang Province have started selling fresh arrival of cocoons. However, the price standing at 920 yuan does not offer a good margin to the producer as the prices have declined by nearly 12.2 percent than the previous year.
Moreover, purchasers have also been very particular about the size thickness, whiteness and clarity of the cocoon and this has created another hurdle for the farmers who would prefer not to sell their silk than give it away at such low rates.
In 2007, prices of silkworm cocoon touched 2000 yuan starting with lower quotes in the beginning of the purchase period and then hiking up gradually in the later days. However, this year there has only been a decline in the prices forcing farmers to sell their produce either to mongers or to leave it unsold.
Reports reveal that the number of farmers breeding silkworms dropped drastically by 10 percent over last year and those who have continued with their trade have incurred heavy loss this year. This plummeting trend indicates a further drop in silkworm cocoon output in future.
