Kolkata jute workers can now take a sigh of relief as The Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) has come to rescue them. They are now forming an All India Federation of Jute Workers Unions that will start its operations from July 6.

Mr Paltu Sen, President, IFTU, while addressing the first State-level convention of jute workers, said that in the domestic jute industry, multi-tier wage system has been prevalent for a long time. There are barely 30 to 35 percent workers who come under permanent category; the rest are temporary contract based workers with names given such as badili and voucher.

Such unorganized systems have given liberty to the management to indulge into unjust practices like minimum salary and wage cuts. Once the union comes into existence, it will strive to provide justice to the labourers. IFTU is also planning to bring other national trade unions like INTUC, CITU, AITUC and BMS together in Kolkata, so that they can achieve common goals more effectively.

There are nearly 94 jute mills in India, out of which 84 are located in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. However, in both these States the income of jute workers is extremely low.

Looking at the present economical condition of the country, where inflation is all time high, such unfair affir is making life of the labourers all the more miserable. The plight of jute mill workers in Andhra Pradesh is worst as they don't even have a wage board; IFTU is now trying to form it, so that some improvement can be bought in the situation.
