Currently, second season tests under Confined Field Trials (CFT) of Bollgard II variety 06Z604D are going on. Besides, already two seasons of tests under CFT with Bollgard I varieties DP404BG and DP448B have been completed. It is hoped that with the data so far generated, the National Bio-safety Committee (NBC) will give green light to conduct larger trials outside confined condition during the long rains of April 2009. However, Commercialization of the transgenic cottons will however be contingent on a suitable regulatory and marketing environment being put in place in Kenya.

A bio-safety law (currently in Parliament) and National Bio-safety Committee approval procedure must be in place prior to Monsanto conducting any commercialization of the transgenic Bollgard II cotton. Further, discussions and negotiations with cotton stakeholders to determine the level of interest and the marketing opportunities will also need to be determined. Therefore, given the above scenario commercialization of the transgenic cotton in Kenya may be estimated to take place after 2 to 3 years.
