Fashion Technology graduating student Danielle Smith hopes to reduce the risk of spreading infections with her design for a nurse's uniform using special antibacterial materials.

Danielle, 22, from Slough, Berkshire, graduates from De Montfort University in Leicester with a Bsc Fashion Technology next month.

For her final show, she has redesigned the current nurse's uniform and introduced the antibacterial fabric PermaGuard. Her new-look uniform has also been updated to be more functional and more fashionable for the next generation of nurses.

PermaGuard was originally designed for use in preventing moulds and fungus in building materials. Its ability to repel bacteria has made it ideal for use in a healthcare environment to help prevent the spread of bacteria among patients.

She said: “I chose this course because it was more technical-based than many other fashion design degrees. I spent a year placement at EMA Textiles in London and this has given me vital industry-related experience while still studying.”

She hopes to continue to use the technical experience she has gained, as a garment technologist, concentrating on childrenswear, inspired by her work placement at EMA Textiles which was based in childrenswear.

The Bsc Fashion Technology course at De Montfort University has been designed to combine technology with design, building technical expertise in fashion processes.
