Since the beginning of the current Iranian year from March 21, the country, which is reputed for being one of the biggest producers of ethylene, exported petrochemical products worth US $2.949 billion.

Total volume touched 3.363 million tons as some 24 different types of petrochemical products were exported during this period. Industry experts are hopeful that sales would hit $14.5 billion by the end of this Iranian year, i.e., by March 20, 2009. A total of $9 billion is anticipated from exports while the remaining is expected to flow in from domestic sales.

Some of the key products (including byproducts) for petrochemical exports are ethylene, propylene and propane among others. Additionally, a considerable amount of benzene and paraxylene have also been traded under aromatic category of petrochemical products.

According to the data collected from the previous year, Iran's largest export of petrochemical products has been made to Japan, UAE, China, India, South Korea, Italy, Singapore and Taiwan.

If exports continue to expand at this pace, Iran has the potential to become a powerful petrochemical player in the international market in the next few years.
