There is good news for the farmers living in Chunya District of Mbeya and other southern regions of Tanzania. The Government will let the cultivators grow cotton this season, after being assured that the red bollwarm, crop pest, is completely eradicated from these areas.

A research that began in 2005-06, will come to an end this year, the study was conducted in various regions in order to know the harm the pest had done to the crops. The initial results show that red bollwarm was still present in areas like Mbala, Ifumbo, Magamba, Kanga, Galula and Chan'gombe except for Mapogoro.

These red bollwarm had forced the cotton farmers to divert and grow sunflowers and sell them to processors who extracted oil from it. However, the growers were not satisfied with it as this industry did not offer them financial security as it has very little market presence.
