Nagaland artisans told to conserve traditional skills

The Nagaland Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd has organized an exciting exhibition-cum-sale which was inaugurated by Mr L Yangtsowo Lotha, Deputy Commissioner (DC)of Kiphire, at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall in Dimapur.

The district level event which will conclude tomorrow is sponsored by the Development Commissioner for Handloom, Ministry of Textiles, India. Mr Lotha, who attended the event as its Chief Guest, addressed the gathering saying, “10-20 years down the line, our identity could be lost and the only way to preserve Naga identity is through handloom and handicraft.”

He further noted that it was an experience to witness such a teeming crowd of artisans exhibiting their skills in a place like Kiphire. He called upon the participants to revive and conserve the traditional skills of Nagaland through their untiring efforts.

Mr P Meren, General Manager, who was also present at the fair, averred that the expo was one of its kind in the district and that the corporation would strive hard to make it an annual affair. He also avowed that from the office in Dimapur, technical support is being given to those registered at the department. Besides, some of the products being displayed at the fair would also be showcased at Naga emporiums in various parts of the country.
