It was announced recently that Science and Technology Ministry's Directorate for Standards and Quality (Stameq), Vietnam and Consumer Product Safety Commission, USA, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the beginning of 2008.

This MoU drafts exchanging information and documents relating to consumer product safety, welfare and customer awareness. Besides, developing or participating in training programmes for officials and non-officials dealing with the related activities.

CPSC sources informed Fibre2fashion that last week, the two parties also inked a statement on consumer product safety affirming a stronger co-operation commitment between the two countries.

CPSC's Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord stated that they were working hard to ensure that clothing exports to the US, especially children's sleep wear, meet all applicable flammability and other standards.

Statistics show that bilateral trade between the two countries reached over $12 billion last year. Key exports to the US included consumer products like textile and clothing. Thus, it is important to focus on these sectors.

The US and Vietnam promised to make concrete efforts to have mutual understanding in this area and take part in emerging product safety issues relevant to the textile sector.
