Production of linen & hemp fabric plummets

In the first seven months of 2008, China's national production of hemp and linen fabrics totaled 153,916,100 meters, representing a year on year reduction of 8.01 percent.
Leading producing provinces and municipalities include Jiangsu Province (43,749,000 meters), Jiangxi Province (33,130,200 meters), Heilongjiang (22,535,600 meters), Hubei Province (11,624,700 meters), Zhejiang (8,329,600 meters), Liaoning Province (8,205,300 meters,) Shandong Province (6,840,400 meters), Anhui (5,610,400 meters), Chongqing Municipality (5,117,300 meters), Sichuan Province (3,452,100 meters), Yunnan Province (3,367,300 meters) and Inner Mongolia (1,003,700 meters).
The total output of the above 12 major provinces and cities reached 152,965,600 meters in the period between January and July 2008, accounting for 99.38 percent of the country's total output.
In the month of July alone, China's total output touched 21,061,800 meters while the production of the above mentioned 12 provinces and municipalities touched 20,916,800 meters, accounting for 99.31 percent of the total output for the month.
According to the statistics furnished by Chinese customs, total exports of hemp and linen textiles and clothing reached US $371 million in January-July period, marking a year on year reduction of 1.03 percent and accounting for 0.36 percent of $102.909 billion of textiles and clothing exports and 0.92 percent of US $40.421 billion worth of only textile exports.
On the other hand, import of hemp and linen apparel and textiles registered $59 million, down 19.52 percent from the same time last year, accounting for 0.53 percent of $11.047 billion of total textile and apparel exports.
