DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions today announced the call for entries for the 2008 Plunkett Awards for Innovation & Sustainability in the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia Pacific. The awards are named after DuPont scientist Dr. Roy Plunkett who discovered polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) – later branded DuPont Teflon – in 1938.

They recognize businesses around the world for their innovative uses of DuPont fluoropolymers. This year, marking the 70th anniversary of Teflon, the 2008 Plunkett Awards will include new sustainability selection criteria as well as increased award values and honorable mentions.

“Over the last 70 years, we have worked as partners with our customers to support them in the development of new products for a number of critical industries that rely on the unique properties of fluoropolymers,” said Patrick E. Lindner, global business director -- DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions.

“As we look to the next 70 years, a new era of fluoropolymers will emerge with great potential for these products to create more sustainable solutions and reduce environmental footprints. With the new Plunkett Awards for Innovation and Sustainability, we look forward to recognizing and rewarding our customers for their continuing efforts to combine excellence in product innovation with an ongoing commitment to greater environmental sustainability.”

The Plunkett Awards acknowledge processors or users of fabricated products made with DuPont fluoropolymers that have devised new products or improved existing products or applications in industries including semiconductors, waterproof and breathable apparel, cookware, data communication cables, automotive, aerospace and renewable energy. Submissions are judged on three primary criteria that include: 1) Innovation; 2) Use; and 3) Sustainability.

The awards' sustainability standard measures whether the product or application helps reduce environmental impact through lower energy consumption, lower water consumption, reduction in material/weight and reduced waste. This new category is in line with the DuPont 2015 corporate sustainability goals and demonstrates the DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions' commitment to sustainable solutions that build the foundation for the future of the industry.

DuPont also encourages submissions that have application benefits including: increased safety, assured quality, improved reliability and lower cost.
