Sri Lanka is hosting the first ever Apparel South Asia (ASA) Conference on the 5th and 6th of November at the BMICH. The Sri Lanka Apparel Institute (SLAI) in association with Lanka Exhibitions and Conference Services (LECS) will bring together apparel manufacturers in the South Asian region at the ASA conference.

SLAI and LECS have pioneered this event with the aim of giving apparel manufacturers in the South Asian region an opportunity to learn about current trends in the industry from the trend setters themselves and the leading personalities in the world apparel arena.

“The conference theme 'Beyond 2010; Challenges and Opportunities' provides a platform to discuss the rapidly changing nature of the apparel trade and how SAARC manufacturers and exporters should respond, consolidate and strengthen their share of the world market,” explained the Conference Chair, Prof. Lakdas D Fernando.

ASA 2008 could not have arrived at a better time with all the turbulence in the apparel industry and the possible removal of the GSP+. The Government bail out package of RS. 21 billion is only a temporary bandage for the overall instability in the industry that the economical crisis has brought about.

This is why a meeting of such prominent and knowledgeable international figures is so important for our local industry to learn how to deal with the challenges ahead and come up with a sustainable plan to steady the industry.

“The impact of the current World Financial crisis on the region's Apparel Exports with particular reference to the Sri Lankan industry, the future of the GSP+ and an insight into the Government's bail out plan will be of special interest to the participants from Sri Lanka”, says Prof. Lakdas Fernando.

There is an extremely powerful speaker line up, that will address pertinent issues that are and will eventually be affecting the Apparel Industry. The Head of General Merchandise Technology of Marks and Spencer, UK, Mr Krishan Hundal, will speak on 'The Emerging Ethical Consumerism and Sustainability in EU and the M&S Response' and the Country Director South Asia for Nike, Mr Atul Ujagar, will speak on 'Innovation into Action'.

The Chief Information Officer of MAS Holdings, Jay J Keller will speak on 'Lean Thinking for Lean Manufacturing'. Deepika Rana the Executive VP of LI & Fung, India will speak on “Strategic Sourcing”. Wendy Malem, the Dean of International Enterprise Development of the London College of Fashion will explore “Nurturing Creativity for Economic Benefit”.

In addition, a Board Member of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) and President of the Clothing Manufacturing Association of India (CMAI), Mumbai, Mr. Rahul Mehta, will present a Country Paper on the Indian apparel industry and Mr Ajith Dias, the Chairman of the Joint Apparel Association Forum of Sri Lanka will present a Country Paper on the Sri Lankan apparel industry.

The conference will also examine the new found importance of ethical consumerism and emerging global concerns such as sustainable manufacturing. Operational excellence will be focused on, which will address topics such as manufacturing excellence, lean manufacturing, global product quality and the building up of supply chains.
