The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Director General, Nusrat Iqbal Jamshed, during his official visit to Malaysia, said the bi-lateral trade between the two countries must be promoted further.
He stated at the press conference, “We would like to be involved textile, handicraft, carpet and other several industries, while Malaysia could export its expertise and invest as well.”
After FTA in 2006, the two countries signed Malaysia Pakistan Closer Economic Participation (MPCEPA) Agreement, last year.
Currently, Malaysia's exports to Pakistan stand at around US $1.7 billion while imports are at only $104 million.
Mr Jamshed stressed, “Textile and clothing, particularly raw cotton, yarn, fabrics, garments and related items account for nearly 61 percent of Pakistan's exports. Further 23 percent comes from leather and leather products, sports goods, wool, carpets, petroleum products and some other products.”
Experts advice that it is important for Pakistan to concentrate on reviving the textile industry, which is the key foreign currency earner for the country, and is in a pitiful state due to international economic recession and internal issues.
