Handloom is one of the key sectors of textiles and is now receiving the much deserved attention from the Government.

Union Minister of State for Textiles, E V K S Elangovan, announced that the Center has proposed to approve 100 more handloom clusters in India under Integrated Handloom Development Scheme (IHDS) during 2008-09.

Reportedly, about 271 handloom clusters have already been sanctioned, of which, 38 are based in Tamil Nadu. Now, 9 more will be added to the State. So far, Rs62 million has been allotted for the State as part of IHDS.

This year two international standard 'mega powerloom clusters', including one in Tamil Nadu, would be established in the country, Mr Elangovan said.

The Central Government has also sanctioned Rs197.5 million as subsidy for rehabilitation of Co-Optex in Tamil Nadu alone. Besides, a total of 273 yarn depots for handloom weavers have been opened in various parts of the country, of which Tamil Nadu houses 173 depots.
