Nov '08
After the discussion with the honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan in Karachi and the Commerce Minister Mr Makhdoom Amin Fahim, yesterday, Dr Ikhtiar Baig, Federal Advisor on Textile Industry, have decided to lead a delegation of major textile exporters to meet the European Union, to discuss possibilities to get market access (FTA) in European Union.

According Dr Ikhtiar Baig, he has requested about sixteen leading exporters in the different textile categories to accompany the delegation at their cost to visit Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, Spain and Brussels.

European Union is already in negotiation with India for signing up FTA, and Bangladesh is enjoying GSP+ duty free status with EU. At the recent 'Friends of Pakistan' meeting, strong indications were given by EU members, to help Pakistan by enhancing their exports to EU.

Dr Baig said that this will be an initial step to accomplish free trade agreement (FTA) between Pakistan and European Union, before the meeting of Pakistani Foreign Minister with the European Union Trade Commissioner lady Ashton in Brussels, Belgium on December this year.
