The Cotton Development Organization (CDO) in Uganda had taken up in a big way, growing of organic cotton in the country to provide a better income to its farmers. But according to experts, production of the organic variety of cotton is far below that of normal cotton output.
The CDO had completely provided the training and also supplied the vital inputs like cotton seeds etc. The mission of the CDO was to increase the income of these farmers as organic grown cotton commands a big premium compared to the normal variety.
According to experts, output of organically grown cotton is as low as 200kgs per care compared to 1,000 kgs for the conventional cotton production, which is equal to productivity levels attained 40 years back.
This has led to a state of despair among the farmers who had taken up the challenge of growing the organic variety and thereby increase their incomes.
