This unprecedented increase is been pushed without consideration for the depressed world economic climate and financial crisis. The weakening of the AUD and NZD against FJD has also been ignored. The industry is not against a wage increase per se, but the increase must be reasonable and sustainable.

The Wages Council of Fiji is supposed to have 3 way dialogue – employers, employees, and independents. The reality is that the independents are not independent. The employers have been accused of thinking only of themselves.

Mr Solanki further said, "The TCF employers have been described as exploiters and 'sweat shop' operators. However, the truth is that our working conditions are as good as any, if not better, in the world, plus our work practices are ethical and fair.

"In addition, TCF industry employers are worried about the jobs at stake because of what is happening around the world and in particular in our export markets, Australia and New Zealand. It is our job to be aware of what is happening in our export markets and how it will affect our businesses.

"If there are no customers, then there won't be any industry left. Hence, we need Wages Councils to be made up of fair and reasonable people who have sound of understanding of economics, commerce, and sustainability that will help both employers and employees."
