Lanxess develops tanning material with outstanding fastness

The specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG has developed a new, sulfone-based synthetic tanning material with outstanding fastness and other properties. The new product Tanigan VR, combines all the advantages that modern chemical technology has to offer the leather industry with those of a vegetable tanning material. Tanigan VR also eliminates the problems often caused by the inherent color of vegetable tanning materials.

In the field of tanning materials, a basic distinction is made between synthetic and vegetable tanning materials. The properties of chemically manufactured syntans are modeled on those of natural, vegetable tanning materials. It is only thanks to syntan technology that it is possible to produce tanning materials economically in sufficient quantities to meet today's requirements. By using different tanning materials, the properties of the leather can be varied to suit customers' individual requirements.

“Tanigan VR represents a new generation of synthetic organic tanning materials,” explains Chris Tysoe, Director Product Development & Application – Wet End in the Leather business unit. “It is the result of years of experience in the use of syntans for tanning and retanning cattle hides in particular, but also sheep and goat skins.

As the inventor and one of the leading companies in the field of sulfone-based syntans, we can now offer our customers a new synthetic tanning material whose tanning properties can compare with those of vegetable tanning materials.” Unlike vegetable tanning materials, Tanigan VR has outstanding heat resistance and lightfastness and is almost colorless. It also has excellent filling and embossing properties.

LANXESS is one of the few suppliers worldwide that offers an extensive range of products for all stages of the leather manufacturing process: not only inorganic and synthetic tanning materials, preservatives and fatliquoring agents, dyestuffs and tanning auxiliaries but also the products required for finishing leather and a comprehensive service. Detailed information can be found on the Internet at www.lanxessleather.com.

The Leather business unit is part of LANXESS's Performance Chemicals segment, which posted sales of EUR 1,970 million in fiscal 2007.

LANXESS is a leader in specialty chemicals with sales in 2007 of EUR 6.61 billion and currently around 15,000 employees in 21 countries. The company is represented at 44 production sites worldwide. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacture and sale of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals.
