Census of handloom sector

The first census of Handlooms was conducted during the year 1987-88 and second census was conducted in the year 1995-96. Thus, the handloom censuses had been conducted at an interval of about a decade.
The work of conducting the Third National Census of Handlooms has been entrusted to the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi on 19.3.2008. As per terms of reference, the work is scheduled to be completed within a period of 18 months of award of work. The work is in progress.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Textiles, Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
