3rd Triennial of Textile Art in June 2009

The Cultural Foundation for the Textile Art and the Art Gallery of Szombathely will organize the 3rd Triennial of Textile Art in June 2009 in the Gallery of Szombathely.
Theme: presence = being present When we unfold the word "presence" and discover its two semantic constituents – "being" (being part of the material world; being) and "present" (the present time, the era in which we are living – we find that when they are matched and juxtaposed in one word – "presence" – the meanings of the two separate notions assume new complex meanings pointing far beyond their individual meanings.
They come alive, enriching, reinforcing and complementing each other, but the differences in their emphases and suggestive patterns also become visible. This interplay can be explored deeper if grasped and further unravelled (in an artistic way).
Entities are at times organically linked and melt into one, while at other times they accidentally drift next to each other or clash against each other. When "being" and "present" are linked together into "presence" they come to mean more than themselves: "presence" includes not only the "present" time but also the past and the future, thus unnoticeably rising into the sphere of totalities and generalities; and when "being" is matched with the temporal aspect of the "present" it gains a clear focus on what is topical and valid at a given time, thus making it up-todate, personal and unavoidable.
Whether we go from the "present" to "being" or we depart from "being and arrive at the "present" we are bound to perform a self-analysis and drawing of balances: we draw an outline and take a snapshot of events of the past, hard facts, given circumstances, opportunities opening up and closing before us.
In other words, we cannot escape translating our situation into the specific dimension(s) of time (and space). When we outline and evaluate the quality, significance, intensity and importance of being in the present, we also undertake the task of depicting the era in which we are living as well as its spirit. It means that we must be extremely accurate and circumspect and must focus on what is truly essential when attempting to specify and define the existence of our being in the present.
Or are we perhaps the most accurate and give the most undeniably authentic answers to the challenges of being in our present time if we keep a distance from the traps of abstract theories and focus our creative energy on trying to put into tangible form the intuitions we have about the constellation of our stars at present?
We invite all applicants to create works that explore the above feelings, situations, phenomena and concepts.
The jury only accepts projects for the exhibition made between 2006 and 2009 and linked to the above ideas or were made specifically on the above theme. We invite applications from professional industrial designers and fine artists in all the three international categories that were announced. The works submitted should include a reference to the characteristics of textile, or express ideas translated into textile.
