Since 1957, the international textile research centre – the Hohenstein Institute in Boennigheim – has been one of the leading organisations world-wide that regularly carry out representative sizing surveys. The results of the measurements taken by the clothing technology experts are compiled into the "Hohenstein Sizing Chart" that has come to form the basis for the sizing of ready-made clothing in countries where German is spoken.

After updating the size charts in the 1980s and 1990s, Hohenstein used a body scanner to carry out the first three-dimensional representative sizing survey on the German population in the year 2000. For the first time, valuable information about details of the shape of the human body was provided to the apparel industry.

In the summer of 2007, some 50 years after the first German representative sizing survey, the SizeGERMANY project got underway. As part of the study, the Hohenstein Institute cooperated closely with the leading body scanning provider, Human Solutions GmbH. Selected results of the representative sizing survey carried out with state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology are going to be presented to a wide-ranging public in conjunction with the IMB, the World Fair for Apparel Production Technology and Textile Processing, from 21 April to 24 April 2009.

At the Hohenstein Institute's stand in Hall 7 C-034, interested companies will have the opportunity to subscribe to various models of participation in SizeGERMANY including determination of market share and access to anthropometric data bases for women, men and children.

The experts will also provide help with implementing the new SizeGERMANY size tables in patternmaking and in testing and optimisation of workmanship and fit for all types of apparel.

Makers of ready-to-wear and retailers can profit from the Hohenstein scientists' wealth of globally unique experience in the areas of representative sizing surveys, the compiling of size tables and testing of fit and workmanship. The opportunity to promote items of apparel with the Hohenstein quality label for fit and workmanship also offers a chance to signal to the customer the quality criteria standard for good fit and workmanship.
