China's cotton imports in 2008 reduced in volume but rose in price. Raw cotton imports throughout the year registered 2.1 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 350,000 tons, or down 14.1 percent.

Import value of this imported cotton amounted to US $3.49 billion, a year-on-year increase of 0.4 percent. China's cotton imports in the first half of 2009 are expected to continue the shrinking trend witnessed in the last two months of 2009.

But cotton imports are expected to gain momentum from the second half of 2009; though overall annual cotton imports are expected to reduce to around 1.5 million tons or a drop about 25 percent from that recorded in 2008.
