Cocoon production of Zhejiang falls in second consecutive year

According to Zhejiang Bureau of Statistics, cocoon production of Zhejiang Province reached 82,000 tons in 2008, less 14,000 tons or down 4.7 percent from the previous year, showing a downward trend for two consecutive years.
Of which, output of spring cocoons, summer cocoons, and autumn cocoons represented 45,000 tons, 4,000 tons, and 33,000 tons, respectively, down 6.6 percent, 21.2 percent and 23.0 percent from the previous year.
Cocoon output of 22 main producing areas reached 78,000 tons, a decrease of 14,000 tons, or 15.6 percent from the previous year while mulberry farm area was 70.34 thousand hectares, less 3.1 percent from 2007.
The main reasons for this decline were that sericulture production was affected by global financial crisis, cocoon prices as well as silk exports fell and comparative effectiveness of sericulture industry declined.
