Outlast presents the newest innovations on Techtextil from 16 to 18 June 2009 in Frankfurt am Main in Halle 3.1., Stand C 18.

DSC tests
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a technique which measures the thermal effects on materials as they are heated or cooled, and undergo thermal transitions. DSC makes it possible to analyze and quantify a materials energy absorption and release in appropriate temperature use ranges. The instrument heats and cools a sample in a controlled manner and records the temperature of the phase transitions (melting and crystallization) of the material.

The machine also records the amount of energy required to melt the sample and amount of energy released when the sample crystallizes upon cooling. The DSC thereby provides quantitative information on the materials temperature buffering use ranges and, by integrating the melt and crystallization peaks, the amount of latent energy capacity or temperature buffering capacity in Joules that are absorbed, stored and released.

The PCM technology
But what are PCMs? The principle is simply demonstrated. Looking at phase change materials (PCM) two well-known technologies are successfully combined: On the one hand is the microencapsulation, as known from the chewing-gum inside which microcapsules are embedded. While chewing the shell is destroyed, and the taste is released. Another example: perfume probes in magazines. The microcapsules being destroyed while rubbing on the paper, as the smell is released.

The difference in Outlast materials: Microcapsules are also used, but the shell is stable and doesn't get destroyed. The capsules are very tiny: Around 1,000 fit on the head of a pin (ca. 3 million per cm²). Inside the patented microcapsules, called Outlast Thermocules, substances similar to paraffin are stored, which are capable of phase change. This simple physical principle is well-known to everyone, example H2O: Water becomes ice or vapour when energy is added or taken away. PCM technology takes advantage of exactly this same law of physics.
